550 Free French volunteers (primarily from Tahiti) joined the British forces in North Africa in April 1941 and U.S. forces (also volunteers) arrived in May 1942. It’s interesting to note that during the course of this campaign American and French soldiers found themselves fighting alongside, and against each other, because of a divided French government.
