February-March 1943: Two advances by U.S. forces through the Kasserine pass into Tunisia were repelled by Rommel, but General Patton led the third, and its success was due in no small part by the actions of the 601st Tank Destroyer Battalion. M3 halftracks with 75mm guns were positioned just behind the hill tops overlooking the passes through El Guettar and, as 'Von Arnim's panzers advanced, the TDs would pop up from behind the hilltops, fire a few times, then return and reposition for more salvos. It's been claimed that roughly 30 units were lost for 50 panzers killed.

April 1941: Free French volunteers join the British forces in North Africa and in May 1942: U.S. forces (also volunteer) arrive with material support. It's interesting to note that during the course of this campaign, American and French soldiers found themselves fighting alongside, and against each other, because of a divided French government.
